Date A Live Movie: Mayuri Judgment Review

yatogami-tooka-date-a-live-anime-itsuka-kotori-3017054Date A Live Movie: Mayuri Judgment is the first official Date A Live Movie and was released on August 22nd, 2015. Life for Shido Itsuka has been relatively unusual over the previous years, fortunately for him, everything has just about finally settled down. That is until one day when upon waking us he notices a giant sphere suspended over the city. As it turns out Shido is the only person who can actually see it, but that does not prevent Kotori’s forces on the Fraxinus from scanning and analysing the orb. They reveal that the sphere is actually a large collection of spirit energy created by the emotions of all the spirits, more specifically their feeling of jealousy regarding Shido and the other spirits. Along with the appearance of the sphere comes a mysterious female figure who seems to be following Shido.

My Review: I really didn’t know what to expect from a Date A Live movie, for the most past I feel that the narrative serves itself better being an episodic feature. For the most part, the movie was fairly decent having an interesting concept. However, the majority of the movie is nothing much more than Shido going on dates with the spirits, essentially filler. Not to say that that is all it has to offer, towards the end the movie does pick up and really explores the new concepts. I don’t want to spoil the ending so all I will say was that I felt it did a decent job of avoiding what would be a relatively basic ending. My personal opinion is that the movie was decent but perhaps would have been better being an OVA, allowing for more of the less “important” scenes to be cut although I can appreciate the decision to make this a full-length feature.

I rate this movie 2/5.
