Accel World was first released in 2012 and follows Haruyuki, a short, obese boy who is bullied by the students of his school. He spends his days connected to the virtual world so he can escape the torment of reality. Then one day after a trying confrontation he meets a young girl called Kuroyukihime, she also just happens to be the most popular girl in the entire school. Kuroyukihime introduces Haruyuki to a program called Brain Burst, the program can be used to accelerate the human continuous to the point where time virtually stands still. Haruyuki soon discovers that Brain burst is also a augmented reality MMO where people fight each other to earn points advance to reach the maximum level. Even though Brain Burst is just a virtual game, the impacts on his life are very real.
My Review: I liked this anime for several reasons. Despite the seemingly light atmosphere there are some truly emotional points, I particularly liked the second half as it did an amazing job of making you feel absolutely helpless. The one thing I wasn’t to keen on was the main character, to me he just felt really pathetic and useless for the most part, but I’m not a fan of any characters like that. Besides that fact I really like Accel World, there are some really great fights and the points that are out of the game really keep the show fresh. At first this show just seems like a sub-par romance show but if you hang out for the first 2-3 episodes you will notice that there is actually some really deep emotions between all the characters. For me the second half is really something else, it was just so expertly written, in a way that makes you need to watch more and more.
I rate this anime 4/5
